2012 SJLBC Winter League Rules
1. Format
A. Additional week scheduled in case of a rain out
B. This is a timed event. Each game lasts a maximum of 2 ½ hours. A warning bell will be
sounded when there are 15 minutes left. If the game is not completed by the expired time,
the score will be the final result of the last end played.
C.There are no tie games. An additional end will be played to determine a winner in case
of a tie. A coin flip will determine which team will be given the mat.
D. Game winners will receive +2 Game Points. Victory points will be awarded to both teams
based on game differential See “Scoring for Winter League” below.
E. Skips must verify game results and sign each others card before turning in to the
tournament director for official scoring.
F. All PIMD regulations apply with the following exceptions:
1. If the jack is burnt, the end is not replayed. The end is counted as dead with no points
awarded to either team.
2. No hammer. The winning team on the previous end has the mat.
G. Trial Ends. 2 bowl trial ends may be played prior to the first game at each skip’s discretion.
2. Prizes
A. Prizes will be awarded up to the top places based on 1) cumulative game points and then
2 victory points. Prize money will be distributed evenly between tied teams other than for
first place.
B. A tie for first place will be broken by 1) head-to-head results and then 2) a 2 end game
single elimination play off. A coin flip will determine which teams have a bye in the first
round if an odd number of teams are involved. There is no play off for other than first
place.
3. Rain Outs
A. Every effort will be made to complete the round robin, however there is no guarantee due
to bad weather. The tournament director will notify team captains as early as possible
when league play is cancelled due to rain starting with the players that have furthest to
drive. Unless otherwise notified, play should always be assumed.
B. Should a rain out occur during play, a game is considered scored if 8 ends have been
played.
C. Rained out games will be made up a soon as possible at the discretion of the Tournament
Director. At most, four games may be scheduled during a day with a reduced number of
ends according to the following table:
Number of Games Played Number of Ends Played
3 10
4 8
4. Substitutes
A. Only one substitute is allowed per team for any given game and the substitute must play
the lead position.
B. It is the team captain or skip’s responsibility to find a substitute for their team when needed.
The tournament director will provide a list of substitutes in advance of league play. It is
strongly recommended that teams line up substitutes as early as possible. Team captains
will notify the tournament director if they are not able to field a team for any given day.
C. Teams not able to field a team will constitute a forfeit with a final score of 0-3.
5. The head umpire will be delegated by the tournament director to resolve any conflicts
pertaining to the Rules of Bowls. Head umpire decisions are final.
6. Bowling will start promptly after 9:30 AM check-in and announcements. You are expected to
be on time. If you are late, the penalty is 1 point and one end played for each 10 min. After
½ hour, the game is considered forfeit with a final score of 0-3.
7. Whites are optional. Dress comfortably.
SCORING FOR THE WINTER LEAGUE
A combination of Game Points and Victory Points are used to determine the winner. Game
points are awarded based on the following:
RESULT GAME POINTS AWARDED
Win 2
Loss 0
Victory Points are then used to resolve Game Point ties according to the following:
POINT DIFFERENTIAL WINNER GETS LOSER GETS
0 6.5 6.5
1 - 3 8 5
4 – 6 9 4
7 – 10 10 3
11 – 20 11 2
21 – 30 12 1
31 + 13 0
When you turn in your scorecard, the result will be tabulated on this scale. If you are involved
in a close game, the points you receive reflect that fact. If the game is a blowout, the score will
reflect that, although in a diminished fashion. After all, beating someone by 14, and beating
someone by 26 is essentially the same. You beat them good. The above table reflects that
you beat them good, but you don't get as much credit for the extra hurt.
